It Is Not Just a Gaming Cafe
Walk into a PC BANG in Korea and you will smell ramen before you see a single screen. PC BANG (피씨방) is the Korean word for PC cafe, but calling it just a "gaming cafe" does not fully explain what it is. Koreans use PC BANG for gaming, working, eating, and sometimes just killing time between appointments. It is one of the most uniquely Korean spaces you will ever walk into.
Every Seat Has Its Own High-End Setup
The equipment inside a PC BANG is not what you would expect from a shared computer space. Most PC BANGs offer high-performance gaming PCs with the latest graphics cards, mechanical keyboards, and large curved monitors. The chairs are wide and padded, closer to a gaming chair than a cafe seat. Headsets are provided at every station. You pay by the hour, usually around 1,000 to 1,500 Korean won, which is less than one dollar. For that price, you are getting hardware that would cost over a million won to own yourself.
You Can Order Food Without Leaving Your Seat
This is the part that surprises most foreign visitors. Every PC BANG has a food menu, and you order from your computer screen. The food gets delivered directly to your seat by staff. The menu usually includes instant ramen (RAMYEON), fried rice, triangular rice balls (SAMGAK KIMBAP), toast sandwiches, chicken nuggets, and canned drinks. Some locations also serve beer. You never have to pause your game to eat. This seat-to-table service is one of the biggest reasons Koreans keep coming back.
Koreans even have a name for ramen eaten at a PC BANG: PIBANG RAMYEON (피방라면). It has become its own food culture, completely separate from the gaming side of things.
PC BANG Ramen Tastes Different
Ask any Korean and they will say the same thing. RAMYEON eaten at a PC BANG just hits different. It is the same instant noodle you can buy at any convenience store, but something about eating it in a dark room at 2 a.m. while the screen glows in front of you makes it taste better.
It All Started With StarCraft
In the late 1990s, the real-time strategy game StarCraft exploded in Korea. Home internet was still slow and expensive, but PC BANGs offered fast connections for almost nothing. Teenagers packed into these spaces every night to play together. StarCraft became a national obsession, and PC BANGs became the place where that obsession lived. Tournaments were broadcast on cable television. Professional players became celebrities. Korea's gaming culture was born inside PC BANG.

The hourly rate is low enough that nobody feels pressure to leave.
There Are Unspoken Rules
Regular visitors know the rules without being told. You do not talk loudly. You wear the headset. You do not take someone else's preferred seat. Corner seats and window spots are considered premium, and regulars will wait for them. Some PC BANGs have reputations for being cleaner, having faster machines, or keeping the room cooler. Koreans will travel past three closer options to reach the one they trust.
Modern PC BANGs Have Upgraded Everything
Today's PC BANG looks very different from the ones in the early 2000s. Many locations now offer full smoking and non-smoking zones, private booth seating, and even shower facilities for overnight visitors. Premium locations called PREMIUM PIBANG offer wider chairs, better monitors, and a much cleaner space. Some have mood lighting, organized setups, and a lounge-like atmosphere. The concept is the same. The experience is completely different.
Why You Should Try One When You Visit Korea
You do not need to be a gamer. Walk in, order a bowl of RAMYEON from your screen, put on the headset, and sit in a padded chair for an hour. It costs almost nothing. It is completely ordinary for Koreans, and completely unlike anything most visitors have experienced before. That gap between ordinary and unexpected is exactly what makes PC BANG worth visiting at least once.
